1.0 General Description
The Model 263 is an interface converter that allows users to link RS-232 and
RS-422 equipment. The Model 263 comes equipped with a DTE\DCE switch and the
choice of screw terminals and RJ-11 modular connector for the RS-422
differential input and output.
2.0 Specifications
Interface:
RS-232: Conforms to CITT V.24 and RS-232. Pins 2 & 3, Transmit and Receive Data,
switch selectable. Pin 4 (RTS) tied to Pin 5 (CTS). Pins 6 (DSR), 8 (DCD) and 20
(DTR) are connected together.
RS-422: Conforms to RS-422
Connectors:
RS-232: DB-25 male or female as ordered.
RS-422: 4 position terminal strip and RJ-11 connector.
Switches: DTE\DCE switch selectable for reversing TD & RD.
MTBF: 360,000 hours
Power: Derived form RS-232 interface. Will operate with TD and ground
only.
Size: 2"W x 2.75"L x .75"H
Environment: 0° to 50° C, 5 to 95% RH (no condensation)
3.0 Installation
The Model 263 is designed to interface RS-232 with RS-422 4 wire devices.
The user must determine if the Model 263 will look like a DCE or DTE device such
as a PC or terminal. When set as DTE the 263 will connect to a DCE device such
as a modem.
4.0 Operation
The Model 263 is configured as a RS-232 to RS-422 interface converter and as
such the unit will perform full duplex conversion of the TD and RD signals. The
RS-422 equipment gets connected to the Model 263 through the 4 position terminal
block marked R-, R+, T- and T+. The R+ and R- are the receiver input into the
Model 263 and T+ and T- are the transmitter outputs. When connecting the Model
263 to RS-422 equipment, the T+ and T- should be members of one twisted pair
while R+ and R- should be members of the other.
5.0 Troubleshooting
To test the Model 263 connect T+ to R+ and T- to R- with 2 jumper wires. This
forms a loop-back connection. Connect the Model 263 RS-232 port to a CRT
terminal and hold down a key on the keyboard (Model 263 DTE / DCE switch should
be set to DCE). If the converter is operating properly the data should appear on
the CRT screen.

When the RS-232 input signal is - or marking the T- lead will be high and the T+
will be low. To cause the RS-232 output signal to be - or marking the R- should
be brought high and the R+ should be low.
The Model 263 is equipped with a RJ-11 phone plug. Only four of the six
positions are used as shown below.

7.0 Power
The Model 263 is powered via the TD input pin.
